Common Questions/Concern:
"Do I have to show my belly to attend Belly Dance class?"
The answer is no! Your instructor most often wears a midriff to help visually break up the upper, mid, & lower areas of her body for clearer instruction. You may find that wearing a midriff will likewise help you perfect clean and precise technique by allowing you to define these areas of your body visually, but you do not need to reveal your stomach. Often women gain the confidence in their bodies after coming to class and discover that they no longer have insecurities with showing their stomach. This isn’t required, and is a choice individuals make themselves that has nothing to do with the name Belly Dancing.
In Arabic, “the belly” is the seat of the soul. Belly Dance has nothing specifically to do with the belly other than to say it is a dance of the soul. A Westerner might equate the expression “to dance from the heart”. Belly Dancers use every muscle in their bodies, and traditionally the belly was not exposed. Today, if you prefer to wear a midriff because that is how you feel most comfortable, great! As long as you have bare feet and a big smile (optional when learning..ha ha) you are ready to dance.
"I have absolutely no prior dance experience of any kind- will I be able to take this class?"
The answer is YES! Belly Dance is a challenging art form but is also one of the easiest dance forms to learn, even late in life. It is safe to do while pregnant and can be danced well into the latest stages of life. Many women take up belly dancing in their 60s and beyond with ease, finding it a great way to stay in shape and enjoy doing so.
"Will belly dancing help me lose weight and give me a chiseled belly?"
The answer is maybe: you see you get out what you put in. Belly dancing will not make your belly any bigger or smaller- you'll use every muscle in the body in isolation. You receive an all over workout but you are able to work as gently or energetically as you please within this class structure, making weight loss and muscle tone possible, but not guaranteed. Most people find that they feel much healthier and fit when they engage in a regular dance practice.
In Belly Dance, what occurs most frequently, is a new appreciation and acceptance of the body you have- most people tend to realize that they are capable, beautiful, and strong when they engage in this dance, creating a satisfaction & contentment with their body, regardless of drastic physical change. The movements you learn in Belly Dance, look good on a variety of body types and as result, make you feel good when you do them.
"Is Belly Dancing just for women?"
The answer is no. You will hear many people speak of Belly Dance as a dance "by women for women" and that is generally something you find in the West however, in the Middle East and other regions where this dance originated, it is a social dance that is done by both men and women, and often more frequently performed by men. There is a very sensual and feminine aesthetic to this dance but it is by no means reserved exclusively for women and many men enjoy Belly Dancing.
"Can I Belly Dance Pregnant?"
The answer is YES!!!! This is the PERFECT workout for a soon-to-be mom! It is gentle on the joints and relieves lower back aches, improves circulation, and helps you build strength in your hips & abdominals that will give you much needed support and control to confidently deliver that baby. Your instructor bellydanced all through her pregnancy right down to delivery day- dancing her baby into this world. If you have any specific concerns or questions, please ask her! She has first hand experience being a pregnant bellydancer!
